Steps to install Plex on Linux

  1. Launch the Linux terminal and import the Plex gpg key.

    curl https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-keys/PlexSign.key | sudo apt-key add –

  2. After importing the Key files, import the ADT repository for Plex.

    echo deb https://downloads.plex.tv/repo/deb public main | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/plexmediaserver.list

  3. After importing the repository for Plex, install the Plex server on Linux.

    sudo apt install plexmediaserver

  4. Now make sure plex media server is running on linux.

    sudo systemctl status plexmediaserver

  5. You will see Active status if Plex is running smoothly on your linux.

Configure Plex Media Server On Linux

Now, we will configure the Plex media server.

  1. Before configuring the Plex media server, make a directory for the media server files.

    sudo mkdir -p /opt/plexmedia/{movies,series}

  2. Now, give the read and write permission to the plex media server directory.

    sudo chown -R plex: /opt/plexmedia

  3. After that, you need to open the browser and type the following URL “http://your_server_IP:32400/web” to start configuring the plex server.
  4. Now, sign in with your plex account and follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Then, on the next screen, name your plex media server and check the allow my files to access remotely option.
  6. Now, add media library name, and click next after entering the folder name.
  7. On the next screen, add the media files inside the folder which you want to access through Plex media Player.
  8. Then, you will see all of the files which you have added inside the Plex media server.
  9. That’s all, now you have successfully configured the Plex media server on your linux.
